The exercise, which held between Monday, December 13 and Friday,
December, 17, 2021, was generally hitch-free.
Of the 28, 048 candidates that scored 180 and above in this year's Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB)
examination and made the University of Ilorin their first choice, 18,639 registered to participate in the pre-admission screening
exercise, while 18,153 actually sat for the post-UTME test.
The Chairman of the Unilorin Admission Committee, Prof. Umar Gunu, who is also the Dean, Faculty of
Management Sciences, University of Ilorin, assured prospective candidates and their parents that admission into the University of Ilorin would be purely based on merit. He, therefore, warned parents and guardians against falling victims to swindlers who
may ask them to bring money in order to facilitate admission slots for their children.
A UNILORIN BULLETIN staff, who was at the Computer-Based Test (CBT) Centre to observe the conduct of the exercise, observed that this year’s pre-
admission screening exercise was an
improvement on previous ones as
candidates did not stay long on the queue before being directed to the exam halls. There were also invigilators at every point as there were enough number of vigilant supervisors at designated points who were checking to ensure that the process was smoothly conducted.
No fewer than 16 computer systems and operators were seen screening candidates simultaneously before they were allowed into the examination hall. The University’s Security personnel were also seen at every nook and cranny of the CBT maintaining law and order and medical personnel were also available to attend to emergency situation.
Speaking on the general conduct of the examination,the Chairman of Unilorin Admission Committee said that the exercise was hitch-free. He explained that all the candidates who participated in the exercise received their results on the same day they wrote the examination.
Prof. Gunu explained that candidates must do well in their JAMB, School Certificate and Post-UTME before he/she would be considered for admission. He added that after the pre-admission screening exercise "the next stage is the
compilation stage where we will collate their JAMB, O'Level and the Post-UTME test results". He pointed out that "the JAMB result will gulp 50% of the aggregate; O'Level 20% while the Post-UTME will be 30%, that will give us 100%",adding that "It is the aggregate that we will eventually use to determine merit cut-off marks based on the approved
yardsticks”.
While warning candidates and their parents to be wary of scammers who would want to extort them, Prof. Gunu said that it is only through the Central Admission
Processing System (CAPS), of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB)
that candidates can know their admission status. He explained that if Unilorin offers any candidate admission, he will know through CAPS which is hosted by JAMB to check their admission status. This is because all admission offers have to be approved by JAMB.
Meanwhile, some parents of the candidates who participated in the test have applauded the management of the University of Ilorin for the seamless exercise as they expressed the hope that the dream of their children to be admitted into the University will
come through.
Mrs Babalola Rachael, who accompanied her daughter down to Ilorin from Kogi State, said her journey was worth it
because it has been the dreams of her daughter to attend the University of Ilorin for her
undergraduate programme.
Mr Onadiran Akeem, who is an indigene of Offa, Kwara State, said that he allowed his daughter to pick the University of Ilorin because he believed "the University is delivering excellently". He was quite sure that his daughter would perform well “by the grace of God and will be a student of the school any moment from now”.
Some candidates who spoke to UNILORIN BULLETIN, also expressed confident that they would gain admission into the nation's most-sought-after
University .
Mr. Aliyu Abdulmalik
Abiodun, who applied to study Computer Science, said that he was sure that he would be admitted into the University. He also commended the quality of facilities put in place, saying, "all the systems were working well and everyone was
comfortable and there were no complaints about the system from any candidates in
my hall".
Miss Bakare Deborah Oluwafunke, who applied to read Law, said she knew of the University of Ilorin from information available online, in the news and what people in her
neighborhood said about the institution.
She added that she was aware that the institution is known for academic excellence and strict morals. While
narrating how she gave all her best to the exam, she expressed the hope that she would be among the few candidates that would be considered for admission, saying being a student of the University of Ilorin will be a great honour to her and her family.
However, a parent, who does not want her name in print, lamented the stress she went through before getting to the exam centre with her daughter. She said one of her children missed her examination due to poor traffic flow between the popular Sanrab Filling
Station and the University's main gate and therefore called for a special
arrangement to take care of the interest of such candidates.
