ASUU Strike: Ooni of Ife Drums Support For Protesting OAU Students

Highly respected traditional ruler, Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II, has drummed support for the protesting students of Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ile-Ife.

Great Ife Students, and other students in Nigeria’s public universities have resolved to remain on the streets to press home their demands for the reopening of their institutions following the industrial action embark upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities since February 24th.

The leadership of the Union in a statement made available to Vreporters by its Public relations officer, Ogunperi Taofeek Olalekan which was signed by the President, Comrade Olayiwola Folahan and the secretary General,Odewale Samuel Damilare respectively on Wednesday said the monarch felt the wind of the protest and had called to show solidarity with the students.

The statement read in part, The President of the union attended an emergency meeting called by the Ooni of Ife. The meeting came about as a result of the gallant efforts of students in the protest held yesterday, Wednesday, 18 May 2022.

“At the meeting, His Imperial Majesty, Ooni Eniitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi (Ojaja II), solidarised with students in the struggle to reclaim our right to education. He assured that he would use his position to also mount pressure on the people in authorities to find a solution to the ongoing strike.

“The President of the Union, Comrade Reform, impressed upon His Majesty the fact that the struggle is a struggle of Nigerian students and that what is of paramount importance to students is that education is prioritized. He maintained that this would mean that the Government ensure that, primarily, ASUU strike is called off and the demands of ASUU are met”.

The students affirmed that nothing will deter them from continuing their protest urging students to converge at the campus gate by 7am.
