NUT, PRINCIPALS WANT EXPERIENCED TEACHERS RETAINED.

The Secretary-General, Nigeria Union of Teachers,  Dr Mike Ike-Ene, has said there is a need to implement the policy to retain experienced teachers and the retirement age introduced by the Federal Government.

The Federal Government had in 2020 increased the retirement age for teachers from 60 years to 65 years.

It also extended its length of service from 35 years to 40 years.

He appealed to the Ministry of Justice to gazette the law, adding that this would make the implementation easy.

Ike-Ene also berated some state governments for not employing qualified teachers.

He stated, “The government at all levels should stop joking with education. It is not about speaking English all over the place, there are 20 million out-of-school children.

“Government must be serious with our budgetary allocations; priority must be given to education. The boys in the South-East are all into trading, they no longer go to school. They are also employing teachers that are not qualified and after five years,  they begin to sack them.”

President, The African Confederation of Principals, Mr Anselm Izuagie, who lamented the situation, said, “I don’t know the fear of the governors; it is a natural policy that should be implemented. They are not helping their states for selfish and greedy reasons.

“You don’t want to implement it but it has been gazetted and the federal ministry has started implementing it.  They are losing the wealth of experience they need in the education sector. The government is not prepared to beef up the sector because education appears not to be a priority. Nobody wants to address the problem, I will advise that they should implement it.”
