The Council of the Federal University of Technology Akure, FUTA , led by the Pro-chancellor and Chairman , Dr Godknows Igali and the University management have celebrated newly promoted professors from all the Schools in the institution. This is part of efforts to recognize the intellectual prowess achieved by the dons and to spur other academics to achieve more in the area of teaching, learning and research. Speaking at the reception organized in their honor, the Vice Chancellor Professor Adenike Oladiji said " the post of a professor is unique because it is only in the university setting that a person can get to the post of professor. For all of you, work has just started. You must be deliberate about mentorship and teaching your peers the importance of putting extra commitment to achieving set goals." She said professors have enormous responsibility thrust upon them by virtue of their scholarship , as they are expected to know something about everything not just their areas of expertise.
Professor Oladiji said " you must apply your knowledge to the community and strive to make sufficient impact. Learn to build and keep relationships and be intentional about university and industry partnerships that can build the community and the Nigerian society. She admonished them to be of good behavior at all times and not be uncouth no matter the provocation as they are ambassadors of the respected ivory tower.
Dr Igali on his part congratulated the Professors saying that they had attained the summit of what a person can attain in terms of intellectual prowess. He urged them not to relent in scholarly achievements and mentoring other academics to get to the pinnacle of their careers too. He appreciated the former Vice Chancellor Professor Peter Adeniyi who was present at the occasion lauding him for laying the foundation that has enabled FUTA achieve so many feats and produced eminent scholars.
On his part Professor Adeniyi described the event as historic. " This day is historic because there was a time in FUTA where there were Schools without professors and this put a strain on the university during accreditation exercises. So the number of professors here present is heartwarming and worthy of commendation," Professor Adeniyi said. He admonished the professors not to rest on their oars and to churn out more research papers and motivate others to become professors. He told them to cooperate with the management to move the university forward and impact the society and the continent through intellectual interactions.
In his response on behalf of other professors, Professor Ife Balogun of the Department of Meteorology and Climate Science acknowledged the University Council and Management for the honor bestowed upon them and promised to put in more productivity and take FUTA to more enviable heights.
The Registrar, Mr. Richard Arifalo said that celebration of professors has become an institutionalized tradition that has come to stay and thanked the Vice Chancellor for the innovation. He said she will always be remembered for the magnanimous gesture.
He thanked the Chairman Governing Council and the former Vice Chancellor Professor Peter Adeniyi and the university management for their dogged commitment in raising FUTA to a world standard institution of higher learning.
