The holy month of Ramadan, which is usually dedicated to fasting, worship and charity, started last Thursday (March 23, 2023).
In a statement signed by the institution’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr Kunle Akogun, the Vice Chancellor thanked Allah for keeping members of the institution’s Muslim community and their colleagues of other faiths alive to witness this year’s Ramadan season.
Prof. Egbewole said, “We must not take being alive at this period for granted. It is a great privilege to be here, healthy and enabled to participate in another Ramadan season in our life times”. He encouraged Muslims to take full advantage of the season to get closer to their creator and effectively reconcile with fellow human beings.
The renowned legal luminary said that the month of Ramadan is not just a special period in the global Muslim calendar but an uncommon season, which is replete with several and monumental spiritual blessings that everyone, particularly Muslims, must strive to obtain.
The Vice Chancellor, who specifically congratulated the Chairman of the University of Ilorin Muslim community, Prof. Ibraheem Adeola Katibi; and the Chief Imam of the University of Ilorin Central Mosque, Prof. Nasir Abdussalam as well as the entire members of the community, urged all to use this season to show more love and kindness to their students, colleagues and other members of the public.
The foremost Professor of Jurisprudence and International Law urged Muslims to learn to give out of what Allah has blessed them with to make others happy. He opined that one of the strongest ways of assessing the conviction of believers is their ability to support others not just in a period like this but also at all times.
Prof. Egbewole pointed out that nothing could be too little or too much to offer to the less privileged around us, particularly at this time, considering the present economic situations of the country. “Those of us who have should give to those who don’t for the sake of humanity and fraternity and for our rewards to be full”, the Vice Chancellor counselled.
He explained that this season, according to the Holy Quran and traditions of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, was institutionalised to serve as an opportunity for Muslims to rekindle their faith, reassess their lives, rebuild relationships and prepare for the future that no one is certain of what it holds, saying that “whoever fasts as it was ordained would not remain the same thereafter”.
Prof. Egbewole urged members of the University community to remain law abiding, loyal and hard working for the University to attain its corporate objectives, assuring that the management would, on its part, continue to do everything within its capacity to motivate them so as to be encouraged towards optimum productivity.
