UniAbuja students stand against renaming school after Yakubu Gowon

Students at the University of Abuja have expressed their disapproval of the Federal Government's choice to rename the institution in honor of former military leader Yakubu Gowon.

A-Media Update had earlier reported that President Tinubu approved the renaming during its last FEC meeting for 2024, as stated by Minister Mohammed Idris. However, students assembled at the university's main gate with signs proclaiming, “We stand for UniAbuja” and “Address hunger issues, not renaming UniAbuja”

Comrade Nkem Silas from the Students Union Government (SUG) called on President Tinubu to reconsider the decision, citing psychological implications and announcing plans to formally oppose the renaming.

Alumnus Prof. Jeremiah Vambe criticized the economic and legal challenges associated with the renaming, which include the necessity to amend foundational laws. Likewise, Comrade Adamu Abdulbasit, President of AISA, contended that this move would diminish the university’s identity and proposed focusing on revitalizing the neglected University of Science & Technology in Abaji instead.
